Benimaclet is a unique neighborhood, with its own personality, an old town in La Huerta annexed to the city. Today it is famous for its multiculturalism, for having become a student district and for its neighborhood conquests. Turiart's "Benimaclet: town and neighborhood" route invites us to get to know this part of the city, far from the more traditional tourist resources of Valencia, from the perspective of sustainability.
Led by an official guide, an expert in the memories of the neighborhood, we will walk through the history, urban geography, and emblematic settings of Benimaclet. We will travel to its origins as an Arab farmhouse and the most characteristic places in its center, the old town that still preserves its original layout. We will continue discovering the phase of growth as a neighborhood in Valencia when houses managed as cooperatives began to be built on the orchard.
During the tour we will get to know places with social and fair-trade proposals, restaurants and bars with an eclectic offer and also traditional shops, restored old houses, cooperatives and coworking spaces. We will end with a visit to the self-managed neighborhood gardens, the tiger nut crops and a traditional horchatería. The Benimaclet orchard is a very lively landscape, full of wealth and linked to the collective memory of the neighbourhood's residents.
This route is part of "Valencia neighborhood by neighborhood", a program in collaboration with the Alter Eco project, which seeks to bring us closer to the neighborhoods of Valencia from a sustainable perspective, interpreting them, but respecting their idiosyncrasies and the way of life of their inhabitants.
We will finish at the border between the city and the orchard, at the perfect time to return to the neighborhood and enjoy its terraces, bars and restaurants.
