At the heart of this boom stands La Lonja de la Seda (The Silk Exchange), one of the masterpieces of European civil Gothic architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It is the ultimate symbol of a golden age in which the city reached its peak splendor.La Lonja is not just the most famous building of its style in Valencia.
It is the place where the city transformed into a commercial powerhouse, where merchants, bankers, and traders closed international deals connecting the Mediterranean, and where vast fortunes circulated, defining the economic future of the region during the Valencian Golden Age. Its imposing architecture, especially its helical columns and rich detailing, has made it a universal icon of medieval economic power.Built between the late 15th and early 16th centuries, it was the true commercial heart of the city.
However, behind its monumental appearance lies a much deeper dimension: a language of symbols, moral messages, carved figures, warnings for merchants, and hidden details that have gone unnoticed for centuries.“Secrets and Stories of the Merchants' Exchange” is a guided experience designed to rediscover this monument through new eyes.
This is not a conventional tour, but an immersive, in-depth journey that reveals the most fascinating, unknown, and mysterious side of La Lonja. Accompanied by a specialized guide, visitors will understand how this true temple of commerce operated, what meanings are hidden within its architectural elements, and why it continues to amaze more than five hundred years after its construction.
Over 75 minutes, we will explore both the exterior and interior of the monument, visiting iconic spaces such as the Trading Hall, the Orange Tree Courtyard, and the Consulate of the Sea. The tour unveils the symbolism of its shapes, the function of its architectural elements, and the key role silk played in Valencia's economic and cultural development, while also bringing us closer to daily life in the medieval and Renaissance city.
